Not a winner but...

Well, I didn't win anything in the Clarity of Night contest but I did make it into the forties club (people who scored 40 out 45 for their writing). So I'm very pleased, especially as reading through the other entries I could see so many whose work I really admired.

I've realised that the stories that worked best for me were the ones that managed to read like smooth prose (with or without dialogue) and didn't feel rushed or compressed, even though they only had 250 words to work with. I especially liked Old Kitty's story, which also made the forties club.

Aerin Rose won the Readers' Choice and Simon Kewin got an honourable mention. JaneyV and Precie were in the forties club. There may be other names you recognise if you pop over there and look! My entry was here in case you're interested.

There's something about a writing competition that fires up my creative streak.

I told myself this year I was going to enter and comment and commit. After reading most of the entries belatedly I'm glad I didn't ;o). When did so many people start writing so, so well????

I have to, of course, commend you for your brilliant choice in characters, Gina. Phoenixes get far too little face time in stories in my unbiased estimation.

Well, well done!!

Oh, and I see Old Kitty and Simon have commented too -- amend that to well, well, well, well done all! :o)

Phoenix, but sadly the phoenix was the villain. I hope I'll be forgiven!

GL--well done, indeed! Your story stuck with me...I really, really want to believe the optimistic interpretations commanders offered. But I guess optimism isn't my style. :). The voices and depiction were strong.

Thanks for the shout out. I'm amazed at the level of competition this time around...so many well-deserved 40s.

Thank you, Precie! There were indeed some amazing stories, yours included!

I missed out on this one and in retrospect believe this to have been a wise decision — any feeble effort I may have proffered would surely have been trampled underfoot by the quality stampede.

Well done for 40ing on down...

Thanks, Whirl. I'm sure you'd have come up with something interesting!

Forgive if this posted twice. I don't think first one made it.

Loved the story. Beautifully written, simply told. The aaaahhhh factor was wonderful.

Had a few minutes and just discovered your blog. I'll get you know you more through your archives. Delightful blog.

WMacQ, thank you! That's very kind. I enjoy reading your blog, even though I rarely comment.

Congratulations on making the forties club, that's great!

And I didn't know not-members could read any stories, but I just read yours and I understand why you've gotten so much points/votes - your story deserves that!

I'd love to read more of your stories! x Lily

Gina, I LOVED your story! And about the whole age issue, I'm sad to say that my oldest daughter sucked her thumb until age 10. You captured the speech of a thumbsucker exactly! And I loved the ending. Really great!

Wayne, thank you for such kind words! (I'm sure that ten isn't too old for thumbsucking. I know an adult who still sucks her thumb when she's tired and among friends!)
