I love getting bookmarks for presents but I always warn people to give me disposable bookmarks as they tend to get lost. I also use anything to hand as a bookmark because I don't like to dogear my books. So I use train tickets, receipts and advertising flyers as bookmarks, until they disappear.
I'm not sure what happens to them but perhaps they they get left in the books I was reading. I've just found a wonderful article Found in Books from Abebooks, detailing some of the more unusual objects they have found being used as bookmarks. These included dollar bills, a hand-painted handkerchief and a list of scheduled operations at a hospital. The article is well worth a look.
I suppose the moral is: don't use anything as a bookmark that you wouldn't want other people to see.

Ah yes. I do exactly the same thing. When I took the Metra to work, I used to save my tickets for the sole purpose of using them as bookmarks.
I do have a couple of wonderful bookmarks. One even shows the line on the page where I left off.
Just read the article. Good stuff. Too bad those bookstores in Illinois don't have websites, or I would put them on my blog. Ah well.
Showing the line on the page sounds like a handy trick.
I don't like the way that links on Abebooks take you to their booksearch and you have to google for other websites but having done that it really doesn't look like there's a website for the Illinois booksellers. Pity.
I love to look through old books and find old bookmarks- or old receipts used as bookmarks, etc.
You know, what would really be great is if I could buy a used microwave book, like that chick in the article, and find a bunch of $1000 bills.
Sadly, all I have is a $2 bill that I sit and stare at in the hopes that it will increase in value by about 1000000%.
I'm using it as a bookmark.
I'm not entirely convinced that using banknotes for bookmarks encourages them to breed like coathangers but hey! it's worth a try.
At this point, I'll try anything.

This post made me realise that I only have one bookmark and it would be nice to have more. I have three or four non-fiction books where I am parcelling out the chapters (else it becomes too much to take in at once) and it would be much better if I had bookmarks for them!
So I went to etsy and searched on "bookmark" and look what I found!

Those are so cool, Sylvia, and you could easily make some. I often use tickets, junk mail (if it's just a flyer) or old receipts. But Hedgehogs rule.
