Progress report

It's now day 4 of Dvorak. I've read that you can be back up to speed in a month but that seems optimistic at the moment.

I know where all the keys are without looking and if I am willing to type at the rate of 10 words a minute I don't make too many mistakes. I can type "the" quickly and accurately every time.

Everything else is SLOW and I'm grateful for the backspace key. I confuse "n" and "t", and "v" and "w" and I often try to type as if the keyboard was QWERTY. My little finger on my right hand seems to be getting more of a workout than usual and I don't much like that.

Will I persevere? All I can say is that I'm not ready to give up yet.

Yeah, just keep at it! It looks like the change will be a good one, but that learning process is killer!

I think that just about sums it up!

Funnily enough, I originally read about this on Holly Lisle's blog and was very intrigued. But then I didn't know anyone who tried it and really wasn't sure what I'd think.

I'm a fast typist so I think relearning might drive me insane. Even though I do have my notebook.

I'll be interested to see how you get on.

It was Holly Lisle's blog where I saw this too. Until I get a bit faster links are out of the question.

I managed 17 wpm today. With QWERTY I was doing 40.

I have been periodically tempted to try out dvorak, but if I ever get on someone else's computer I'd have to revert back so I've been hesitant.

The thing is that the conversion is so simple.

All you have to do is to change the settings on a pc by going to: Control Panel, Regional and Language Options, Languages, Text Services and Input Languages, Details, Installed Services, Add... and add the Dvorak keyboard.

It sounds complicated but really it isn't. You don't need a special keyboard although you can get stickers to add the Dvorak letters to your existing keyboard if you like.

What is hard is retraining your fingers to the new layout.
