A meme by any other name...

I've been tagged with, sorry Sophie, I mean I've been awarded the honest scrap meme award. I'm invited to "tell you 10 true things about me and then tag 7 folks to do the same thing". I'm currently unavailable for memes but Sophie is a special friend and she did trick me into it ask me nicely.

I'm guessing that "I'm a 54 year old married woman with two grown-up sons" isn't interesting enough but by the time you reach the end of this post (a big assumption there) you may think that is comparatively exciting after all. Here goes.

1. When I was a little girl I was called "Lulu" and as I got older I outgrew that and came to regard it as a shameful secret. My sister calls me "Gee" and my Mum calls me "Ginny Liz" and I'm old enough now not to mind what I'm called.

2. I love science fiction. When I was a kid this too seemed shameful as science fiction wasn't quite respectable and it certainly wasn't written with girls in mind.

3. I used to have a crush on Patrick Stewart or rather on his Jean-Luc Picard persona.

4. I loved climbing trees and even when I was sixteen I could often be found up a tree.

5. I took up springboard diving when I was forty-two. I've always loved the water and when I used to go to the seaside with Nanna she was always scared I'd drown. She was afraid of the sea so she used to support the RNLI and now if I make a donation to them I think of her.

I was recently tagged with the "six random things" meme so my other five true things can be seen here.

I'm not tagging anyone else as I think you're probably all memed out but if you fancy doing this one then consider yourself tagged.

It's better than Patrick Stewart having a crush on you, I suppose.

I know he's a bit of a dish for a warp driven thespian bald guy, but the last thing you need when you're poised ready to dive off the springboard is someone creeping up behind you and going down on one knee clutching a huge bunch of roses...

EXCUSE ME, fairy. "Used to have" a crush on Jean-Luc Picard???? I still do, babe. And he's old enough to be my grandfather!

My niece is a "Lulu" - her given name is Sophia Elise, but they call her Elise, which I made into Liesel, then Liesel-lu, then Lulu. (Her twin sister, Harriet, is called Haha, which is perhaps an even more unfortunate derivation than Lulu.)

Also, Whirl keeps beating me to this posting thing! (Or I'm stalking him - I'm not sure which)

There's that bit in the Star Trek movie where the Borg have gone back in time and the Queen Bee Hive Mama is torturing poor Data and it's all gone to rack and ruin when Jean Luc goes all Die Hard and shows off his biceps whilst simultaneously wiping out the Borg.

For a fifty-something bald guy - he was totally HOT!

Total scifi geek here but John Cricton is my favourite character of all time. Major major crushvilles.

I quite like Lulu but I'm at a loss to understand how you got to it from Gina?

I loved the tree climbing thing but gave it up when I suddenly shot up and got very very clumsy at around 12. And as for diving - I'm impressed! I can only bellyflop and man they hurt!

Oh, see?, I find you a wonderfully fascinating fellow traveller!

I, too, had a crush on Jean Luc. As a matter of WEIRD fact, I've had a thing for bald men since I was like 19. And! one of the things that made you irresistible to me (besides your enchanting name & the recommendation from Marta to check you out) is your appreciation for Sheri Tepper. I worship her and I got to meet her last year. Bliss. AND! I'm a total tree-hugger hippie chick.

PLUS, now we're even b/c one of my first memes was the blue Pyramid Book Quiz which I got from Marta who got it from you. Full circle, baby.

See? We're soulmates. Thank you.

If you ever come to my house, you'll have to just float around. To have our patio redone, we had to remove the diving board from our pool. Turns out it's now against code to install a diving board for a residential pool in California. Or so I'm told.

I never had a thing for Picard, but I can agree that bald men are very sexy. As I heard a wise bald man say once, "I have better things to do with my hormones."

Oops... I had a mini-crush of Chekhov from the original series.
...shouldn't have admitted that...

Ah, Jean Luc. Even I have a thing for him, though I much prefer to have him read to me than anything else.

I love Sheri Tepper. *sigh* Haven't read her in a very long time.

I never got the Jean-Luc thing until hubby made me watch some TNG and I have to admit, he's got almost an outerspace Atticus Finch thing going on, which is definitely appealing.

And go you for climbing trees. I always wanted to when I was younger, but we didn't live near any good climbing trees, plus I was kind of prissy about getting my clothes dirty...

Wow, all the sci fi fans are appearing as if by magic. I hadn't realised there were so many of us.

WO: He was a bit of a dish but then he got taken by the Borg and I couldn't trust a man who'd been in the collective with Seven of Nine.

Aerin: You must be so young. Patrick Stewart is young enough to be my heart-throb. He's older than my husband but then I am a cradle snatcher, as my fifty-one year old husband frequently tells me.

I think I prefer "Lulu" to "Haha".

Janey: Jean-Luc is definitely more fanciable than John Crichton, although he's rather scrummy too. It's the voice and the old-fashioned courtesy that I can't resist.

I don't think you can get to Lulu from Gina. My Nanna had a daughter who died and her name was Georgina so I think it was to avoid painful memories, although I didn't find this out till I was much older. Not that I'm Georgina, I'm just Gina.

Sophie: You met Sheri Tepper? I am so envious. You must write a post and tell us all about it.

I'm glad you liked what you read.

Pjd: It must be great to have your own pool, even without a diving board, but I'd be annoyed at having to take an existing board down.

Scarlet: Having a crush on Chekov is perfectly natural and wholesome. Seriously, it was Kirk who always seems a bit sleazier to me.

Sarah: another fan of Jean-Luc and Sheri Tepper. We all have such good taste.

AC: "Outerspace Atticus Finch" - that's it!

I was very lucky because my Mum never complained about me getting dirty climbing trees and as I was usually wearing stretch trousers with elastic under the instep and an anorak I wasn't worried either. My fashion sense is just as sharp today.

Lulu is cute!

Sarah, Patrick Stewart is the voice of any number of animated characters, though my favorite is the one he does in "Nausicaa" - I could put it on and just /listen/...

Oh, and fairy, you are the same age as my mum; as in, NOT old at all. Fifty is the new twenty-nine, and all that!

I never have read science fiction, but I loved the Star Trek series with Patrick Stewart. I love his voice.

Also used to be a tree climber.

I say again, I wish we were neighbors. We could have a tree house on the line between our houses, and hang out up there, drinking tea (or wine) and watching Star Trek reruns. And Janey could come over. Maybe even Whirl, if he promised to wear his kilt. (Or a Star Trek uniform.)

Robin B. said...

P. S. Forgot to say, I emailed you an excerpt...

fairyhedgehog said...

Thanks, McK.

Aerin: I can see why Patrick Stewart is in demand for voice-overs but I don't know Nausicaa.

Robin: Thanks for the excerpt, it's just what I needed.

I'd love to share a tree house with you and have Janey and Whirl to tea. You shouldn't have mentioned the kilt, though. Now I need to go and lie down.

do your cats eat hamsters?
mine is in the pen holder right now.
and is digging the dust out of it.

fairyhedgehog said...

My cats have never eaten a hamster but then they haven't had the chance. My son has a hamster in his room and the cats love to watch it from right up close. I'm pretty sure they'd try to catch it if it got free.

platypuspower said...

i wanna cat, even if it plots to kill me.
are kittys plotters?

fairyhedgehog said...

Mine don't really plot to kill me although their behaviour on the stairs makes me wonder sometimes. They are hard work when they're little though.

Bee said...

I'm very impressed by the springboard diving!

fairyhedgehog said...

Thanks, Bee.

It was good fun for quite a while, until I took a job that clashed with the timing. Then I got ill and now that I'm getting better the lunchtime club has shut down, so it's really a thing of the past.
