Fed up with Facebook?
There's another new alternative to Facebook: Diaspora.
The big advantage is that it's independently run and that it doesn't demand your "real name" or your gender. If you choose to set your gender, you have a blank box to fill in so you're not stuck with only male or female.
It does allow you to connect your account to Facebook and I have very mixed feelings about that. And it's still in alpha, so likely to be buggy.
It's interesting to see what they're doing though so if anyone wants an invitation, let me know and I'll invite you over. You can email me at doyouwanttojoindiaspora.fairyhedgehog@recursor.net - I wouldn't put your email address in the comments here, it will be harvested by spambots!

Another social networking site? Thank you for the kind invitation, but I find that these networking sites turn me into a lurker and I rarely update my own status.
I really can't keep up with it all!
Sx
I don't blame you, Scarlet! But I'm nosy and I want to see what's going on. Plus I keep hoping for an alternative to Facebook!
Actually, I've kind of gone back to blogging. (Not that I've been very faithful about that lately.)
Part of the problem with facebook for me (other than the obvious privacy issues) is that a lot of people I know (and like) can't decide if it's for private or professional use. I joined it for strictly private use to share pictures and tidbits with family and friends. Turns out, they aren't using it very much either. They're busy with RL and see it as a timesuck more than anything else.
I completely understand the sudden sprouting of anti-facebook platforms, though.
I gave up on Facebook some months ago now after I realised that most people were updating it using some kind of 'gadget' and weren't actually reading other people's news. I get enough egotistic divas at work without reading them in my own time.
I might try this one to see what I gett. I'll email you.
Oh noes!! Another social networking site! LOL!
Enjoy it!! Take care

MRp, I don't actually use Facebook; I just get emailed when someone posts something that affects me directly. Sadly, one or two friends only contact me that way. (I'd prefer an email!) So I'm not sure if I'll use this either. I do like that I can be fairyhedgehog there though!
MAJ, I hadn't thought about the automatic posts because I don't read people's feeds or whatever they're called! I'll invite you as soon as I get your email.
Kitty, I had a feeling you might not be impressed!
Thank you for the invitation!
I have a Facebook account because a friend hassled me to get one, but I don't really use it. I find Twitter more fun. I'll have to see what I think of Diaspora!
jj I don't know if I'll use it but it's fun to look around and suss it out!
Facebook is the only enclave in the known universe where one can hope to live for the thrill of superfulously exacted perfectitude, moment by moment, as the sands of time demand better fruits of humanity's eternal inconseqeuntitude.
But try tweeting that on a cyber T-shirt...
Whirl, um, yes. It's definitely an enclave.
Sounds interesting. I'm only just taking the occasinal peek at Google+ - that's how behind I am - so I'm not sure my poor old brain can handle another platform just yet!
Simon, that's about where I'm at too but I can't resist nosing around to see what it's like!
