Spray-on clothing

When I've thought about future clothing (for sci fi stories) I've mainly had in mind a torc worn round the neck that produces an electric field all over the body. The field could be transparent, translucent or opaque and as multi-coloured and changing as desired. The idea would be to keep dry and warm with as much or as little concealment as desired.

Well, we're not there yet but this is one I didn't think of: spray-on clothing. The future is now and I love it!

That particular future looks a lot more comfortable for 'smoothies' as opposed to 'furries' like me... it would be fine until I wanted to take it off, then I'd get an all-over wax whether I wanted one or not! :-o

As a Futurama fan, I've already seen this: Amy's spray-on bikini when they go to the beach, just before Fry's sandcastle is destroyed by enemy aliens...

That is pretty cool. Just got to hope the solvent never gets into the water-cycle and rains on everyone ...

Richard, ouch! They didn't talk about that in the video...

Lexi, I must have missed that one.

Simon, that could lead to interesting results.

Your torc reminds me of the holoprojectors my MC uses to change his appearance.

For everyday clothing, my characters wear clothing similar to ours, but with embedded fibers that make the garmet warmer or cooler. They also resist stains.

Hi Sandra! That everyday clothing sounds like something that might be possible now. It's a cool idea.

By the way, I can't get into your blog at the moment - there's a problem with the Blogroll software possibly hosting malware, according to an article on Google.

That is so crazy! I'm not sure how I feel about it for clothing, but the suggestion of spray-on bandages is a great one that should be explored.

Kelly, I've a feeling that might be the application that catches on!

I don't fancy spraying myself with cold liquid when I'm getting dressed in the morning!

I like the medical application side to this.

I'll have to train Charlie to spray the stuff on me though! LOL!

take care

Ooh, I read a science fiction book by Richard K. Morgan that had spray-on bathing suits.

A great book, actually--the best thing about it was how it had all this incredible technology that the characters barely thought about, because to them it was normal. For example, at one point, the main character rails about all the idiots riding their hover-bikes along the beach highway at 300 km/hour while "wearing nothing but a spray-on bathing suit and a pair of flip-flops." It was just so amusing to see human nature portrayed perfectly in a very futuristic scenario.

Kitty, that's a good idea! I wouldn't trust Rufus, though. It's good to see you up and about again - I hope you're fully recovered.

jj, that sounds like a really cool book. Do you remember which one it was?

FairyHedgehog: It was the final book in the author's "Takeshi Kovacs" books. I keep meaning to go find the first two, because I liked this one so much (warning: it's quite brutal and violent at times, too.) The three books are, in order, "Altered Carbon", "Broken Carbon" and "Woken Furies".

Richard: Your body hair would become part of your pseudo-fur, just like nature intended!

Actually, if it peels off skin that easily, it might pull away from hair without pulling it out, also.

jj, I may have read Altered Carbon, I'm not sure, but I know I haven't read the other two. I did find it a bit violent.

Came by earlier, but didn't have time to comment. This looks very interesting. I'm trying to imagine the fashion use for it. It seems like spraying this just right and getting the sleeves the way you want won't be easy.

Do they trim it afterwards? The collar looks very even when she's moving it around, but not when they sprayed it on.

Could be we will see spray on artists selling one off shirts that they paint on you while you wait - and pose.

I do like that it can be dissolved and sprayed again. Could be very useful in disasters. Don't send clothing - send these spray cans. They'll fit every time.

Sarah, I love the idea of having an artist spraying a one-off shirt onto people! That would be great.

My only thought is that the spray needs to be onto bare skin, or so I suppose. A lot of people get very hung up over a woman baring her breasts so I wonder how they'd cope with that.

The spray-on bandage idea is already science-fact rather than science fiction.

You can buy spray-on plaster in a handbag-size aerosol can in most pharmacies/drug-stores, and it's excellent for minor injuries, especially where ordinary plasters won't stick like up the side of a nail, or across the folds of a joint. It's especially good for scrapes and grazes, as long as you clean them first.

It stings for a second or two, then the pain is gone as it's protecting any exposed nerve-endings - and it takes about 30 seconds to dry fully.

Highly recommended. :-)

Thanks for the link, Richard. That looks like useful stuff!

Back in the late 80s early 90s I read some short stories by a cyberpunk type writer (can't recall the name, but he's big now) and he had people have space suits or environmental suits that came out of torc-like devices. it's a great place to hang an item like that, seeing as it's handy and not going to get in the way of movement.

ww, drat! I thought I'd invented it. I suppose it's a bit of an obvious idea though.
