A Free Book for Christmas

I've just come across the latest free online book: Suite Scarlett by Maureen Johnson. It looks like fun.

Reading books online just isn't the same and I don't have a Kindle so if I really like a book and it isn't too dear I tend to buy the paperback. It means that offering free online books is a good way to let readers see if they want to buy. I wonder if that will change in a few years time when we all have portable book readers.

Oh, and Merry Christmas one and all.

I doubt I'll ever buy an ereader. If I do, it won't be for some time. I really prefer the physical books, which I can talk to and pet-- um, I didn't just say that!

I carry one under my arm like a security blanket so I'm not in a position to talk! I suspect I'll get an ereader eventually though.

To be honest, I found the web format hard to read and the iphone option asked me for a 10-digit number (my phone number isn't 10 digits, I presume it's US only) so I gave up.

I like the idea of getting a taste of an author and I have made a point of purchasing books where I've enjoyed what I read online - but it *has* to be easy to access and easy to read.

Merry Christmas!

I will probably be the last person on earth to purchase an ereader - or its equivalent. I want a physical book to put on a shelf where I can see it and be reminded to reread it every so often.

There's something about holding a book that's special.

I suspect we'll have an ereader soon enough.

As Girly of Whirly (woman of impressive bookcase) noted the moment she saw the Sony offering on telly: oooh. That would give us so much more space in the lounge...

Books, I fear, are on their way out.

Meanwhile — a merry Christmas to all Hoglings. Even the feline ones.

sylvia, the online format worked well for me but I don't like reading novels online. It's a pity it wasn't right for you.

Robin, Merry Christmas to you too!

Bevie, I love the feel of a new book but I like the idea of having many books in one small package.

Whirl, I don't somehow see ereaders replacing my books. They'll be extra! Merry Christmas to you and yours as well, especially to Geoff from Rufus.

I'm yet to be convinced by ereaders. I'm staring at screens far too much as is.

Have a cool Yule.

Kevin, thanks and I hope you do too.

I'm not a big fan of reading online either - I've read a few books on my iPhone - not something I'd always want to do. Nothing beats the book!

Haha, guess who got a Kindle for Christmas.

It's neat!

And it's nothing like reading online nor the iPhone - it is somehow matt so it looks like paper, not a screen.

I'm going to go download this book now! :)

In this household, ebook readers share space with traditional books.

We both have the older Sony 505s and they're great for reading in bed - much less painful for arthritic fingers to support if it's a long, heavy book!

We do still buy and enjoy traditional books too, and have several bookcases chock full - their place in our home and our hearts is safe...

The two forms of reading are friends rather than rivals because the e-readers are an 'enabling-technology'.

Enjoy the holidays, everybody. :-)

Lisa, physical books definitely beat online reading. Nice to see you here, I hope you have a good time over Christmas.

sylvia, the Kindle sounds like a wonderful present! I absolutely hate those stupid regional restrictions though. Hope you're enjoying Christmas.

Richard, you almost persuade me to get one too. I can imagine doing the same as you and having lots of books in both formats. Happy Holidays!
