Freezing

The garden looked beautiful this morning after a hard frost but I pity the local ducks. This is their pond:

And here you can see the poor little creatures freezing their feet on the ice. I wouldn't want to be a duck today.

There's a little bit of that frigid water for them to swim in. Frankly, I think I'd prefer my feet on the ice rather than my butt in that water.

I know someone who had ducks in her pool regularly. I took a picture once when there were about 60 of them there. Not great for her pool, though.

Our local pond is the same. I do pity the ducks but I have to admit to laughing my socks off watching them trying to walk across the ice. They all looked like they'd been on the sauce.

They (ducks) do have all that fat under their skin, and the feathers shed water. But how much do they feel the cold, I wonder?

What a pity my monitor shows everthing ten shades darker than they really are. The picture on the bottom looks especially good.

Yesterday, I rescued my Dad's fish from a pond looking much like this one. Still thawing out.

What? You broke them out? I keep checking on mine under the ice but they're still swimming around fine. Aren't they adapted to deal with the cold?

I have this image now of several koi carp with blankets around them sitting in front of the fire in Whirl towers sipping cocoa.

Isn't that pretty. Not a sight you get around here.

I shouldn't think you do get much ice in Oz, McK but I admit I hadn't thought about that!

I have no idea how much they feel the cold, but I do try not to laugh at them poor things. I wouldn't like them in my back garden, especially the geese, they have filthy habits.

I'm happy to know that the fish at Whirl towers are so well-catered-for.

Thanks, Robin.

I felt the same sympathy for my chickens. I ended up making them some oatmeal.

(Do you think that I anthropomorphize them too much?)

Poor little chickens probably need extra looking-after in this weather. You can't be too kind to the animals you take care of.

There's a story in this somewhere. I feel A Wind in the Willows reading coming on . . .
