Bugger Blogger

Writing.

Blogger recently changed their word verification system for comments to a captcha system that uses almost illegible words, making it hard to comment. They didn't tell us they'd done this, so if you think you're using the old word verification system then I'm afraid you're wrong.

If you would like to turn off captcha on your Blogger blog, then on your Dashboard go to Settings, Comments, then most of the way down that page where it says 'Show word verification for comments?' choose no, then at the foot of the page click Save Settings. If you do that you may need to moderate older comments as you will be getting more spam. But at least your friends will be able to talk to you!

I've turned captcha off on this blog and because I don't want everyone who comments to be constantly spammed, I'm trying out Disqus instead. If you normally comment here, please could you test the system and see if it works for you, and if it doesn't then let me know on buggerdisqus.fairyhedgehog@recursor.net (or the email address in the sidebar).

Kitty, you're definitely no robot! Thank you for commenting. At least I know the system works for you!

I did a post on this a couple of weeks ago, which raiseda lot of comments about word verification. I hate the new system and so do lots of others - but has Blogger listened?  No.

Good for you explaining how to switch it off.

I've just tried to comment and your disqus word verification is just as bad.  Sorry!

MAJ, I didn't even know that Disqus was using word verification. OK, back to the drawing board!

I don't use word verification on my blog, or comment moderation. Since I stopped allowing anonymous comments, I don't get any spam at all.

I want to make it as easy as possible for people to comment.

Disqus has gone. So have everyone's pictures! Stupid internets.

Lexi, I've gone back to the Blogger system, with no anonymous posts. I'll see how that goes!

This is an irritating kind of phenomena on the internet: sites that alter settings and introduce flannel.

I've had to stop using Facebook for fear that malicious elves will creep into my house during the night and unpick the hems on all my underwear.

Whirl, and now I have a new fear to add to the growing list the media provides!

Debra, pleased to see you again! I remember the name Dreamweaver but I don't know what the A-Z was.

Haven't commented in a while mostly because I've been away from the blogosphere. But I'm back now, so happy to help :-)

Hurrah! Delighted you've switched the darn thing off.

Hi Wendy! Good to see you again!

Simon, me too. I wish Blogger had told me that they'd changed it. The original version wasn't nearly so awful.

What a mess. I can't remember what I've got set on mine. Haven't been aorund the Blogosphere in awhile either. Not enough time in the day, week, month, year. But that's been my complaint for a very long while.
