I did a silly thing
I didn't know it was a silly thing; I thought that setting my laptop to "hibernate" would save power. Only there's a "known issue" that Windows Vista can't cope with hibernating and hangs. The trouble is, the issue wasn't known to me. So I hibernated, then I tried to restart the laptop and it hung. And kept on hanging. By the time I'd done a number of power resets (ie pressing the power button until it turned off) I had buggered the disk and the computer was working like a slug on Prozac, only not so fast or so reliable.
I've now spent two or three days reinstalling all the Windoze updates, after resetting the laptop to factory settings. I've got all my data. I'm reinstalling my blog reader and my Twitter program and all the other bits that I need. I've nearly sorted out the font size issue. What I haven't got is my bookmarks or any idea of what I've been missing for the last few days.
So if I've missed something scintillating that you've said, feel free to let me know. Otherwise, have a good August Bank Holiday weekend and whatever you do, don't hibernate.

I never hibernate my pc - I don't know why, I just never do!
Awwww lovely fairyhedgehog!!! These tech things were send to test our patience, really and truly! Well done you for getting your laptop to behave again! Yay!
Have a great Bank Holiday. Of course it'll be nice and sunny! :-)
Take care

Kitty, well we have thunder and rain now but I live in hope!
And not hibernating your pc is a really good move!
I;m not hi tech but can usually figure out what I need to. If I can't I grab a 7 year old. They know everything, but spell "great" "gr8". Good for you getting up and running again. So much for the greening of FHH!
It's like little children: They always look so innocent when they're sleeping.
But when you try to wake them up, the horror begins anew!
I'm so glad I went from XP to Windows 7 and missed Vista completely. I hibernate all the time. What I don't do is leave the battery in if I'm plugged into the wall.
Hope it all gets up and running better than before.
Wilkins, I did have help! The wonderful Derek from The Spykiller helped me to work out what was wrong and my son started me off on the process of taking my laptop back to its factory specs. All I did was keep updating Window until it would update no more!
jj, and I had no idea!
Sarah, you did well! I don't leave the battery in either because the manual said not to. Sadly, the manual didn't mention the fact that hibernating is a very bad idea!
If you upgrade to Windows 7, be prepared to hibernate all the time. That's the screen saver setting. Only take moving the mouse to unhibernate - which means I could be gone and the computer closed and one of the cats could turn it back on. But then it'll hibernate again in a short time (one hopes).
Sarah, That's so very, very different from Vista. Unfortunately, the upgrade is hugely expensive!
My profoundest sympathies. I'm a ludite at heart. Ihave a love/hate relationship to my computer. I love to hate the thing!
Sha'el, thank you! What's worse is that it's broken down again. This time we're completely reformatting the hard drive (translation: my son is doing all the clever stuff and I get to press "OK" every so often.) He's rescued my data, so at least I've got that.
once you go MAC, you'll NEVER go back :O lol
olde wuffs only DOZE, at best ;)
Laughing Wolf, Oh if only! My poor little laptop stopped responding altogether, even after reinstalling Windows completely, and is now back with the manufacturer. :( My husband's pc is in many ways nicer but it's not mine and it's not a little laptop. Oh well.
