Comfort reading

I've just finished the latest Kim Harrison book Black Magic Sanction which is pure escapism. I've read all eight books in the series now. They are definitely comfort reads - they pull me into another world where for a time I can forget about anything that's troubling me. A bit like alcohol but with no side effects and a much quicker recovery rate when real life calls.

Other authors I like for comfort reading are Diane Duane, Tanya Huff, and Terry Pratchett. What are your comfort books? Or do you prefer chocolate? (I like combining the two.)

OMG! I jsut LOVE Kim Harrions books with Rachel, Ivy, Jenks ... I do so miss Kisten.

Right now, I'm totally addicted to the Outlander series.

Books have a way of transporting that TV and movies don't have. I think because you actually have to use your imagination and brain!

Oh fairyhedgehog - your blog is crying and all sad! :-(

What a week it's been for you - what a loss, I am truly sorry.

Terry Pratchett and alcohol with chocolate (a chocolate beer!)and endless Frasier re-runs are always, always comforting for me.

And cuddles from the kitty!

Take care and big hugs over the ether.

Yep, gotta concur with the whole Pratchett and chocolate thing. Whisky's good too, I find.

I'm partial to Madeline L'Engle and J.K. Rowling - their books always envelop me in a sense of nostalgia and feel-goodiness.c

Jane, Simon, and Kitty I'm glad to see that you all agree on Pratchett and chocolate, even if like me Jane is keener on tea than on alcohol!

Kitty, yes I changed the look of my blog to reflect how I'm feeling. I did it at Christmas too but I don't think anyone noticed! Cuddles from my kitty can be a little daunting when he decides to bite!

nitebyrd, I'm glad you're another Kim Harrison fan. I haven't heard of the Outlander series. I'll have to look out for them.

maybe, I haven't read Madeleine L'Engle for a while now but I remember loving her A Wrinkle in Time.

Terry Pratchett is one for me, definitely, but I'm currently re-reading the Harry Potter books as a comfort nosh/book.

I always appreciate chocolate, but given its tendency to give me headaches, it's not necessarily comfort food. It's more like alcohol in that sense--getting a painful hangover is a real possibility.

PS - The Outlander series is by Diana Gabaldon, and I believe in the UK it's called "Cross Stitch". No one (including Diana Gabaldon) knows why it was given a different name when it was released in North America.

Like the new look of your blog! I enjoy reading Terry Pratchett if I want 'junk food' for my brain :) his novels make me laugh and takes me away from the stresses of everyday life.

Hot tea, some chocolate (alomost any kind, I'm not picky) and a book to read is the place I always want to be when I need comfort. Under a blanket in cool weather, on the couch, or in summer, wine and chocolate in a lawn chair on our deck. I reread old favorites when I need comfort. Which one depends on what kind of comfort I'm needing right then...

It's all changed here again!
Comfort reading - has to be Mavis Cheek and David Lodge.

jj, so you're another Pratchett fan! We've got enough of us in here for a book club. It's a pity you can't use chocolate for comfort but I suppose it's easier on the waistline if you don't. Oh, and thanks for the info on "Cross Stitch".

Jen, thank you for the kind words!

DJK, I'm glad you like the look. I like the way Pratchett makes me laugh, too.

Robin, yay for chocolate and favoutite books!

Scarlet, I don't know either of those authors. I'll need to check them out.

Bernita, I like Elizabeth Moon too, especially Speed of Dark and Remnant Population.

perhaps I'll have to check this series out. I currently have in my stack to read the latest book by Lisa Shearin, I've enjoyed her series so far. I really like reading books that are already establisthed, that way I get to read one after the other rather than waiting the next year!

Lisa, that's a good idea about established series. I hate having to wait for the next one to come out!
