Chocolate is of course the most precious substance known to humankind. I've had confirmation of this in the book I'm reading at the moment. It's Wizards at War by Diane Duane. Faced with mercenary soldiers who refuse to reveal their secrets, one of the characters holds up a slim black rectangle, golden at each end.
"I have here," she said, in very clear and New York-accented Speech, "a new bar of Valrhona Caraïbe Single-Estate Grand Cru."Now there's a woman that knows her chocolate! And she uses it to bribe the alien race into giving her what she wants.
What I love about Duane's Young Wizard books is the gentle humour that runs all the way through. Even when the Wizards are saving the world they have time for a joke. It's pure escapism, which is what I like. That and a bar of chocolate.

I just read this at four in the morning and you're making me hungry. I'll get you for this, and your little dog too.
Oh we do like Wizards saving the world with chocolate.
Chocolate and Blueberry muffins.
Yum
:-)
Take care

Hilarious! Both the pic and the quote.
I wish I lived in a country where they knew how to make the stuff.
David, I'm deeply sorry for making you hungry. I hope you found some chocolate to fill you up.
Kitty, saving the world and chocolate are a good mix!
Adam, I could send you some? My email address is in the sidebar.
Thank you, fairy. I sincerely appreciate the offer (really!). But don't worry about us. We've got ways of getting good chocolate :-)
Should we ever meet, you'll find I'm a lot easier to bribe with chocolate than aliens. Plus, I don't destroy entire galaxies with a flick of my little tentacle.
I've left an award for you over on my Chez Aspie blog.
Adam, maybe another time then. The offer remains open!
Whirl, I'm so glad to hear that you don't go around destroying galaxies with a flick of your tentacle! Such a relief.
DJ Kirby, Thank you!
Oh, yeah. Chocolate is both my enemy and my friend, and through it all, I'm in love with it.
In my family chocolate's not complete without cinnamon and chili powder. Pretty sure we're the only planet with those too. ;)
Food for thought:
If you, like me, consider chocolate to be the only compelling evidence of intelligent design, it might follow that it was brought here by aliens, and therefor not unique to earth after all.
Robin, my enemy and my friend - I'll drink to that!
SH adding chilli I'd heard of but not with cinnamon too. It sounds wonderful.
Kate, you could be right but there's no evidence of any alien civilisation that has chocolate...
I really need to stop thinking about it and start eating sensibly!
I don't know why anyone would find that surprising. I would sing for a Bournville dark chocolate bar!!
how appropriate.
Isn't chocolate in the food pyramid?
Ann, if you put a video or podcast of yourself singing on your blog, I'll mail you some Bournville chocolate!
Lisa, at the top, obviously!
As I plunge into the abyss of PMS you toss me a chocolate coated life belt.
Must.
Go.
Shopping.
Jane, chocolate is the essential cure for PMS. Well, it makes it bearable anyway!
Glad to see you around again. I missed you.
I have always preferred butterscotch and caramel to chocolate. So I scoff at your attempts at bribery. I'm not betraying my planet for anything less than a high-end creme caramel.
batgirl, so now we know your price! *evil grin*
It's good to see you in here again, too.
Hi
I just popped in for some chocolate!
:-)
and to say thank you for thinking of me and my cat. I really appreciate it...
Take care

Kitty, I'm so sorry about what you're going through with your cat at the moment. I've been there and you have my real sympathy. It's hard.
Hi
Chocolate was a blessing today!
Thank you so much for being here for me. It's taken me a while to reply to everyone because whenever I started I just welled up again. I went out for a long walk and met up with a great friend and reminisced (and cried) alot about my cat. :-)
Take care
x
Kitty, you're so lovely! Thinking of other people even at a time like this! I wish there was something I could say to comfort you. *Hugs*
Using chocolate to save the world? I must read it!
Tia, I love the Young Wizards books, even without the chocolate!
Hey there, FH - how are you feeling?
If they're smart enough to realize the value of really fine chocolate, maybe we should let them take over...
Robin, I'm OK thanks. I just got preoccupied with other things, like making a window cling for the hall where the cat tore our last one! I hope you're doing well.
raine, if we let them take over, they'd get all our chocolate! Nooooes!
I love the Young Wizard series. I stopped at seven or eight, though, just before the Wizards at War came out, so I haven't read the chocolate scene.
I want the tee shirt to go with the magnet.
ww, I've got the next one on order for when it comes out in paperback!
I bet you could get the tee shirt made up.
