Nano tip

Don't forget to back up your work.

I've remembered so far. As soon as I've written my 2000 words I get out my memory stick because I couldn't bear to lose all that writing and have to start again. Every Nano there are stories of people that lose their work. I don't want that to be me!

If you look in the comments you'll see that Sylvia has an even easier way to back up.

I am working directly on a dropbox directory. That means there's the copy on my harddisk and a copy on the server. If I turn on the laptop, it will synch with dropbox as well.

You get 2GB free and you can get more space by referring other people (my referral link) or by buying an upgrade. But as I only store textfiles, 2GB is more than enough for me.

(They aren't paying me, honest. I just really love the system)

Thanks, sylvia. I'm downloading it now! I've used Google docs for the same purpose but this looks even easier.

I just email pages to another computer.

It's all good, Scott. Just so long as we're remembering to do it.

I get really anal about this: I work online, save to a stick and keep a last-best copy on a USB hard disk.

Too used to working with local government computers, I guess.

Being anal about sounds great, Kevin. It would be awful to be casual about it and then lose shedloads of work.

I'm usually crap about it, except during Nano. Writing 10,000 words in four days brings home to me how much I have to lose.

I've just been emailing it to myself. That way it's on Yahoo's servers.

Fairyhedgehog, you're on fire! 22% already!?!

Thanks, Kate! Emailing it to yourself is a good way too. Any way is good as long as you remember to do it!

Yep, I'm another that's been furiously saving every 200 or so words and then emailing the most recent version to myself every 2000 or so :)

It's a terrifying thought!!

maybe, that sounds just like me. I'm using sylvia's Dropbox thingie now and I think that's easier.

Dropbox is great. I've been using it for just over a month and I'm not sure how I managed without it. Such a life saver, not having to constantly worry about where my thumb drive is.

fairyhedgehog said...

mynfel, I'd never heard of Dropbox until today. It really does make life easier.

Great tip. It would be so disheartening to loose your work.

What would be nice is if all the lost work ended up on a rememberystick and became annonymous bestseller...

I don't 'get' the dropbox idea, although once I did 'get' it, I bet I'd love it!

What I do now is save on a memory stick and also send my revisions, work, etc, to my email address. I keep it in a folder marked 'novel' and 'short stories'. I hope that's safe, because it seems like a good idea.

fairyhedgehog said...

Tara, it would be devastating!

Whirl, what a lovely idea.

Robin, whatever works. I've used gmail as backup before now, it's just Dropbox is easier. I may do the odd memory stick back up as well.
