Snowed in

We had a foot of snow in the night and we are snowed in. The roads are impassable and there are no trains or buses running. Most of the London Underground has also shut down.

So it's an impromptu holiday! I plan to make a snowman and have a snowball fight with my husband.

I'm just wondering what we are going to eat. I have got chicken pasta sorted for tonight and we have a drawer full of frozen sausages and some eggs. I think I may have to get creative with what's in the store cupboard. Poor family!

Pictures to follow.

I hand a bit of an "oh dear" moment this morning when I realised we had no bread. Luckily Hubby baked some before heading off to work. I hope that he just turns around and comes home. It's started snowing again!

I like being snowed in (for a day or two) - providing there's plenty of food, drink and warmth.

As a child it was an excuse to stay home from school. As an adult it was an excuse to stay home from work.

Now that I'm home all the time I don't know what it's an excuse for.

Still cool, though.

Chicken pasta sounds good.

I usually worry when it snows: is it bad enough to cancel appointments, could I drive, etc. This is so bad that we're just kicking back and enjoying it.

Janey - what a nice husband to make your bread!

Bevie - I'm home all the time and snow is an excuse to have fun.

Are you really going to make a snowman and throw snowballs?

No slushballs! That's cheating.

My husband said Britain is having its worst winter in 30 years. Is that what it feels like to you?

Can't wait for the photos!

One of my childhood joys that I regret my children won't experience is the thrill of listening to the radio on snowy mornings, waiting for the school closures to be read. More often than not, we had to go when it seemed most of the state of Connecticut was let off.

Wow, a foot! That's some serious snow. Hope you are safe if you do have to trek outside.

Scarlet - it is fun once you give up all idea of doing any of the things you had planned for the week.

Robin - I've been told it's the most snow since 1991 but I've a feeling we haven't seen snow like this for longer than that.

Pjd - I don't remember ever missing school because of snow. My junior school was only twenty minutes away on foot so we could always make it there. I do remember once taking well over an hour to walk home from High School in a blizzard. Happy days!

Natalie - Apparently I exaggerated. My next door neighbour measured the snow and it is only eleven inches. Mind you, I bet another inch has fallen by now. It's quite unusual for snow to settle at all and we consider two or three inches to be exciting so you can guess how we feel about a whole foot of snow.

The cats aren't impressed though.

I've been watching London come to a standstill - it seems a bit crazy for the amount of snow that's fallen? But I guess it depends on if you are used to it.

It was raining like crazy yesterday and storming last night but the sun came out again today - hurray! ;)

We all think it's crazy too, sylvia, but we just aren't set up for it. We don't usually get enough snow to make it worth the cost of buying all the snow ploughs we'd need to cope with weather like this.
