Last weekend my Beloved and I went to Rye for our anniversary. It's one of the English south coast Cinque Ports, although five miles or so from the sea now, and very pretty indeed.
Ancient houses.
Historic plaques.
I seem to be trying to fly but without success.
Bodiam castle.
So that's what we did at the weekend. Feel free to add your own captions!

I want one of those plaques!!! LOL!!!
Happy anniversary!!! Great you had a fab time in Rye!
Take care

Rye is lovely, isn't it? Looks like you had great weather too. But, what have you done with all the other people? The place looks deserted? Have they been abducted en masse?
Caption for first shot:
See how strong I am? I can hold this roof up with one hand!
Old Kitty, thanks!
Simon, I expect they were watching sport on tv. That's all that seems to be on, these days.

Richard, ah, simpler days! *snort snigger*
I love Rye too. Good tearooms there if you like a nice piece of cake (as I do).
Glad you enjoyed it :-)
It's beautiful. I want one of those plaques, too!
I am so jealous of Europeans. You guys have SO MUCH history and neat old buildings... and I love old buildings. And history. And you appreciate them, there. Here, they just as often get knocked down and turned into Wal-Marts as get saved and preserved.
Looks like it was a neat trip and happy anniversary!
Bodiam castle is great isn't it, exactly how castles are supposed to be.
It's years since I've been there. I had a splendidly mad day out where I spent most of the day in Rye then got the bus to Dover that went through Dungeness.
Looks like a wonderful weekend! I absolutely love castles and castle towns. I'm also extremely jealous of you guys in your living history. It's so cool. (Especially the old castles and pubs.)
Only an island country could get away with a port named sink.
I only remember seeing Beloved sitting down. I had no idea he was a giant, as evidenced in the first photo.
Clair, we discovered two of the lovely tea rooms and I'd love to go back and find more!
nitebyrd, me too!
LTH, thank you. We are very, very lucky to live where we do and we don't take it a bit for granted.
Dan, it really is like a castle out of a story.
Kevin, wow, you do get around!
Robin, it was a splendid time. You'll be coming over and enjoying some of our history soon, anyway!
Peter, *laughs*. Yes, we grow our men big over here.
We grow big because we get fed and pampered so well... there's a lot to be said for being spoiled rotten. :-)
(6'1" and 260lb in my case)
I am still laughing at the plaque. Such wit! I love it.
Happy Anniversary.
Richard, I must spoil Neil rotten then!
Ann, it is fun! Thanks for the good wishes.
I feel the same as L.T. Host!
Bernita, well there's nothing for it then. You and L.T. Host will just have to come and visit!
I still have the picture on my wall of The Landgate, Rye, bought during a family holiday many years ago.
You look like you're operating an invisible hover mower that's actually hovering...
Well, it's my own fault for coming so late to the game- Old Kitty said it first: I want that plaque!
How are the flying lessons going, FHH?
All I could think of when I saw that picture was Chicken Run. :)
Miriam, it's so very picturesque, isn't it?
Whirl, *laughs*
Mother Re, *sniggers*
I want a plaque like that for our house!I have no idea what we'll be doing yet for our anniversary but I doubt it will be anything on this scale.
DJK, I wonder where you can buy those plaques. I could make a mint reselling them.
It was nice to get away on our own because our family holiday will be full of family this year. That's great, but I like a bit of space too sometimes.
Love the plaque! Any idea what inspired it? Would love something like that that on our house...
Dorset Allsorts.
Dorset Allsorts, that plaque is very popular, isn't it?
I was in Rye a few weeks back. It was heaving with tourists but so quaint and lovely. There were two houses along a narrow street - one was number 44 and it;s next door neighbour was 44 1/2.
Jane, that's brilliant!
JaneyV: When I was a kid the town I lived in had a street where they'd obviously started building from both ends and discovered too late that they'd made a mess of the measurements... Number 52 was right next door to number 56 with no space between them.
I bet you can't guess what address we always used to give to any cops that took exception to our pre-teenage mischief? ;-)
