I think I'm finding my writing voice and it's weird. So far I have a surreal story about a new google application, a story about a travelling shower that starts, "She didn't mind arriving wet so much as always arriving naked", and a reworking of the Sleeping Beauty that is definitely not PG.Oh well, at least I'm writing. Does what you write ever surprise you?

It does, frequently, and that's surely a good thing. I do like the sound of all those stories though - they sound both wonderful and intriguing.
Thanks, Simon. You're so encouraging!
I tend to be more surprised by the writing than the ideas. I've always had ideas, but the fact I can write them down now still surprises me.
Frequently!
My best "lines" seem to come out of nowhere while I'm in the middle of plodding along.
I suspect it has something to do with a word association trigger.
I really like your "arriving wet/naked" line--did it appear the same way?
Always!
This is a brilliant sentence!! Good luck with it and with your writing - yay for you!!
Take care

I find that no matter what I'm writing, in whatever context, I cannot "lose" my voice however much I may try. It does mean, though, that I get the occasional surprise when I'm reading something and realise I'm unexpectedly being quoted.
The opening of your shower story sounds like something out of "Time Traveler's Wife". Would love to see where YOUR story goes ;-)
Polenth, you're ahead of me. I've always censored my ideas so it's taken a while to get used to letting them run!
Bernita, I'm not surprised, seeing the story you've written!I've no idea where "wet and naked" came from.
Kitty, you too! And thank you.
Kevin, it's great to have your own voice like that.
Wendy, I didn't think of the Time Traveller's Wife. It's a great book. I wish I knew where my story was going!
Ref: "She didn't mind arriving wet so much as always arriving naked"
That's a terrific opening hook. Hold on to it. It's awesome!
Thanks, Maria. That's very kind of you!
I do like that first line!
And I completely empathize about not knowing where your story is going when you start it. Half a month ago, I wrote this opening scene I really like...and I almost no idea what comes next. {:-/
I've always thought you had a cool writing voice, and this excerpt just cements that belief. So don't be muzzling that voice, please - just take off with it!
Constantly. :)
I want to read the travelling shower story!
jj, thank you! And I'm reassured that you don't always know where you're going either.
Robin, thank you so much!
raine, you too!
DJK, so do I! I really must get on with it.
I often surprise myself in irritating ways, usually with lines that don't seem to fit anywhere.
Whirl, like your recent post title?
Sorry I'm late to the party.
Surprise me? All the time. And where I'm going in my writing evolution surprises me, too. But good surprises.
I LOVE that opening sentence! I hope you'll ask me to beta-read some of this stuff when it's ready.
I agree with everyone; that first line is pretty great.
The other day I read over something I had written last year and some parts surprised me in a good way- like that's pretty good; I don't even remember writing that. Then, other parts made me cringe in embarrassment.
Sarah, it's nice when the surprises are good ones!
DB, thank you! I'd love to have you a a beta reader. I'd better get on and finish some of these!
Missed Periods, I can relate to that. Looking over an old piece of writing I usually find it's both better and worse than I remembered! By the way, I love your blog!
