Chicken

chicken suit

A lot of Nanowrimoers have friends who don't understand why they would want to do such a strange thing as to try to write a novel in a month unless there's some big prize at the end of it.

For me, it's like running a marathon. You have the professional athletes who aim to do it in less than three hours as part of their training and other people who train for months or years just to be able to say that they've run it at all.

And me? I'm the one in the chicken suit. I don't take it seriously, I'm not aiming at turning professional, so I might as well have fun along the way; but boy what a major achievement if I get 50k words written in a month.

If you're doing Nano this year, what's your reason for doing it?

Awwwww! And you can crochet your very own chicken suit too! Why not!?! And as for marathons, I always always always remember the ones in the chicken suit more than I do the actual winners! Take care

When I first did Nano, it was to prove to myself that I could do it, and to actually get myself to write more than three pages of something.

After doing it a few times over, I no longer enjoy writing a full 50000 words in a month. So this time round I'm just going to write as much as I find comfortable.

I'm only doing that much so that I feel justified in coming to all the pub meets; if it wasn't for those I would probably have forgotten all about Nano by now.

(I hope this comment wraps properly when posted, because the preview looks horribly wrong)

Kitty, a crocheted chicken suit, what a great idea! I wonder if I've got time to make it...

SillyBoy, I'm glad you're joining in! I really love the meets too.

I'm doing NaNo again. This will be my second year and I hope to win. It's a great way to get the first draft complete. Yes, I'd love to get a book published, but for me, getting my stories finished it the greater task.

Debbie, yay! Another Nanoer! We can cheer each other on.

I'm not - but if I was it would definitely be as a way of giving myself a target to motivate me...

Simon, you seem to be able to motivate yourself pretty well!

I did NaNo four times. At first, it was just to finish a novel. That was a huge barrier demolished when I completed the 50k in one month. The next three times were to try to produce something worth publishing. On my fourth try I nearly got it.

But then I decided to write a novel over the course of a year. I knew I could complete the work, and I had built my confidence enough to crush my inner editor during the process. Success. And now I've finished my second year-long novel, which I'll self-publish (hopefully) by the end of the year.

But I'm doing NaNo again. Why? Because I think this time I really can write a sellable novel in a month. That's what I'm trying for. Sure, it'll need serious revision, but that's no different than the ones that took me a year to write.

We will see.

I'm also doing it this year because I'm certifiably insane. Apparently.

Peter, I think "certifiably insane" is the best reason of all for doing Nano!

Good luck with writing a useable first draft within a month; I'm sure that's doeable. My problem is always what to do with the drafts afterwards: revising a whole novel is just such a big undertaking.
