Gardens

Today ten people in our local area opened their gardens to the public in aid of a local hospice. For £5 we not only got to look at all the gardens we also had a cream tea. It was wonderful.

A woman I met said, "We English are good at coming out for two things, one is the trooping of the colour and the other is to look at gardens." I'm not so sure about the trooping of the colour, I've always thought that was for tourists, but gardens are another matter entirely.

I didn't like to take photos of their gardens, so these pictures are of our garden.

I enjoyed seeing what other people had planted. Now I want to get some foxgloves and some daisies. I've always loved daisies.

I've been to the trooping of the colour and it's nowhere are nice as these gardens look!

That's a very neat garden, very unlike mine own!

I always like to have a nosey to see what people are doing with their gardens.

Your yard has seen a lot more care than mine.

Love this idea to fundraise. What fun to tour people's private gardens with tea as the proverbial icing.

Talli, I definitely prefer looking at gardens to watching a military parade!

Kevin, we cheat! We have a man and his son for an hour a week or we'd be up to our waists in weeds.

Nosiness was definitely a factor in our enjoyment!

Sarah, if only we could take the credit for it.

It really was a pleasant afternoon, not least because of talking to the other visitors.

Wow!!! What a brilliant way to raise money for the hospice and a fab way to see other people's gardens! Fantastic.

Aww Foxgloves - I always grew foxgloves when I had a garden - no good in pots!

And daisies - I've never been successful with them! But they are ever so pretty so good luck!!!!

You've got a lovely garden!! I like how it's surrounded by these mature trees.

Take care

Oh how I love gardens. When I lived in Europe, I loved what I saw people do with their gardens. I don't have the space here for one. Plus, I have the opposite of a green thumb. (What color on the spectrum is completely NOT green? That's me.) Thanks for sharing your garden with us.

Kitty, it was absolutely brilliant. I'm not sure when I'll try and get some daisies going. They are very pretty though.

Wendy, I think I'd miss a garden if I didn't have one but my only real talent for it is pulling up bindweed!

Sigh. Other people's gardens just remind me how lovely ours could be if we spent lots of time working on it!

Simon, that's why we cheat!

You can save a lot of effort by choosing stuff that looks after itself... we have two raised beds as well as an 'edge' bed around the lawn, and there's only one area that's not planted with stuff that's let to it's own devices to self-seed.

This bed has mainly horizontal conifers, which are great ground-cover as well as providing hiding-places for the local cats, who love it under there
in hot weather.

Total maintainance? Prune it once per year! :-)

Richard, that's a lovely rockery you've got there! I'm amazed that it's low maintenance because it really does look pretty.

FH, as you've no doubt discovered Cats aren't the world's best gardeners - so minimising their opportunities to 'help' is generally a 'good thing' .

Juniperus Horizontalis as a family are very useful there... they're as spiky as a badger's butt and although cats can find safe haven underneath there's not room for them to squat. ;-)

That is a great fundraiser!

That looks like a great conservatory.

I've been banished to the greenhouse in recent weeks while men tear my house apart.

Hot.

Whirl, it's a wonderful conservatory but I do sympathise with you being banished to your green house. That must be hot, hot, hot! (I'm sounding like Latvialovedoll, sorry!)

I love gardening but I keep dropping my plants.

I'm Green fingered.

*slinks away, head bowed in shame...*

Well may you bow in shame, Richard!
