Shop early for Christmas?

I really hate doing my Christmas shopping early but I'm signed up for NaNoWriMo again so I can write November off. I have three and a half weeks to get ahead of Christmas before the madness begins.

I'd much rather start writing now but then I'd miss the excitement of being part of the challenge. It's like my husband doing the London to Brighton Bike Ride - it's no fun doing it on your own.

So, is anyone else up for the challenge? I realise that you may be a "real" writer, someone who writes all year and has a hope of getting published. Maybe Nano would take you away from more important writing. If you're like me, though, a happy amateur, then come and join us. All you have to lose is your sanity. (I'm making a big assumption here.)

Hope you have a productive November.

I've thought about Nano a few times, but as I have the pace of a slug, 50,000 words in a month is way too much. Especially before Christmas. All those hats with bells to try on...

The word count doesn't intimidate me. I can pump out words faster than a hot air popper pukes out popcorn. About as bland, too. I always need to go back and add butter and salt.

It's just that I don't generally do well having to write. Suddenly, I'm no longer hidden at my desk. I suppose I could be unofficial and just write 50,000-words in November.

Just loaded up everything I've written in September and the first few days of October. Seven projects and 121,000-words. I suppose that's too much, isn't it?

I've never tried NaNoWriMo, but you've got me thinking about it.

Thanks for following me, by the way.

Damn, I would love to do this, but . . . school. Maybe next year?

Whirl, I only managed 25k last year but it was more than I'd have done otherwise. If you're not joining in the Nano madness then I hope you'll at least be posting pictures of yourself in those hats.

Bevie, You're so prolific! We're complete opposites: having all those other people writing too and having it as a challenge really helps me to get me writing. If you have something new to write for November then I'm sure you could manage it if you wanted to but there's no point if it doesn't appeal.

Hi Wings, lovely name! Oh, and you're welcome. I'm interested in the issues you're writing about.

stacy, there's always next year. I would try to encourage you for this year but I know how much you've got on at the moment. School is much more important.

I'd like to say yes, but I have committed myself to finishing a reasonably good draft of "Magus of Athlinar" before NaNo starts. If I get that project in the bag early, though, I planned on segueing to Blood Shot.

I learned a lot from my one time of doing NaNo. Not in a good place for it this year as I am trying to finish up (hopefully) publishable stuff right now. Good luck. And don't give up. I wrote almost half of the 50K in the last week and 7K on the last day.

writtenwyrdd and Sarah, it sounds like you're both involved in important projects that would have to be put on hold for Nano, and it's clearly not worth it.

writtenwyrdd, do you mean that Blood Shot would be a Nano novel, or is it something else?

Sarah, 7k in one day is impressive. I've never written more than about half that in one day.
