Stopped.

It's odd that since I stopped doing Nano I haven't written anything. A whole week of not writing! Natalie should have swapped with me: I could have gone a month without writing and she could have written a novel for me.

I suppose that was the point of Nano for me though: to get me writing again when I've lost the urge. I enjoy producing something that wouldn't have existed otherwise but it's hard to get going.

Maybe I need to try something much smaller for a change. That might be more manageable.

I advise flash fiction. It's like doing a puzzle... I should do more really.

Scarlet-Blue has a good point. Start with just 250 words - Get inspiration from anywhere: news, a photo, a song, an overheard conversation... then go from there. If you're feeling brave - you can share it with us!!!

I haven't written a word on my WIP in three weeks. No idea why but I just can't get into it!

Scarlet-blue: that's a good idea. I've never tried flash before but maybe it's time to give it a go.

JaneyV: I'm sorry you're stuck on your WIP. Is that the one about Poppy? I think it would be fun to read that; but maybe less fun to write it.

Flash fiction -- what a great idea. I have an idea right now for a mystery set in the late 1920s in Los Angeles. A Hollywood mansion, all lighted up and full of partying people, is slowly being towed down Wilshire Boulevard at about 1 AM to be put on its new foundation on the beach at Santa Monica. There's no getting on or off -- so it's a sealed environment. And a murder takes place. What I have right now are two Oklahoma dustbowl refugees, sleeping in a spinach field on a farm alongside Wilshire, hearing a jazz band and waking up to see this enormous brilliant house glide slowly by. I did flash fiction after reading scarlet-blue's comment and realized that the host of the party, and the house's owner, is Busby Berkeley, the director of the most surrealistic dance routines ever filmed, and that the party is packed with ambitious young women who appear in his new movie, one of whom is Lucille LeSeur, who will go on to be known as Joan Crawford.

So flash fiction also works as a way to flesh out an idea.

BTW, on my site right now is the beginning of a bunch of questions about the creative process that I'll be sending to writers, composers, painters, etc. Look at it and see whether there's anything you want to add. I'll start soliciting guest blogs about creativity next week.

I haven't touched my WIP in far too long either. And there's an editor waiting for me to send it to her. Erica asked a good question the other day on her blog and it lead me to realize how I am complicating my writing. I need to get back to simply writing and let it go at that.

I let you know how well I do after this next weekend is over.

If I have a lot of down time from writing, I try to fill it with reading and researching things about writing. At least I'm still advancing my craft that way.

Wow, I love the imagery in Tim Hallinan's set-up.

Try the write or die page that you linked for 10 min a day - just to keep the gears turning ;)

Hey FH,

Just popping in to say hi!

Wow, such a huge response. Thank you, all of you.

Platypuspower: You've got some really interesting writing on your blog. I loved the descriptions of your holiday. It's just that the layout makes it hard to read and find stuff.

Tim: Thanks for dropping by. I did look at the list of questions on your blog but I'll go and have another peek.

Your mystery idea sounds fun.

Sarah: Good luck with your WIP. You are so far ahead of me in the writing game.

Sylvia: I linked to Write Or Die but was too cowardly to try it. Maybe I'll give it a go. Maybe...

Robin: Hi! Thanks for popping in.

I think you've done a great job, though! I've been watching your word count go up and up.

Thanks, Natalie. I think you've done an even better job of not writing. It sounds like writing for you is like reading for me and there is no way I could go a week without reading.
