Robin's Challenge

Robin has bravely recorded her voice on her blog so that we can all hear how she sounds. Very nice, is the answer. Anyway, she's challenged us to give snippets of our voices too, so I've recorded a short "Hello from England" video.

Boy, did that test the limits of my techie ability! I could record a sound snippet using my headphone mike but but I couldn't save it and the quality was poor. Then I used my webcam but had trouble finding where I'd put the files on my hard drive. Then I couldn't log on to YouTube because I'd forgotten my login. Well, fairyhedgehog was taken and I forgot I'd added my age at the end. Not that I should need YouTube, but Blogger can't seem to process the video. Sometimes this techie stuff is just far too complicated.

Anyway, I think I'm blathering because I didn't like how it came out: I managed fine the first time but the recording was poor and when I re-recorded it didn't come out the same. Oh well, here it is anyway.

Anyone else up for letting us hear your voice? Sylvia? Jessi? Anyone?

Oh, I love your voice!

Man, I've just discovered I'm an asbolute sucker for British accents. Between you and WO, I never want to hear my own voice again.

WhirlOchre has got a particularly nice voice, I have to say.

You sound so nice!

fairyhedgehog said...

Why, thank you, Natalie!

Will you please read me a bedtime story?

I'm with Kiersten. The British accent is just so fabulous. Listening to myself, I just feel like an uncultured bore.

I'm so amazed that everyone likes the English accent.

I say "English" because Scottish, Irish and Welsh are all British and all different. Mind you, there are dozens of different English accents too.

FH, I imagine you narrating an elegantly animated Beatrix Potter story. You've got a calm voice, yet it's rich and lush, like the English countryside on a sunny afternoon after a rainy morning..

Oh, your voice is so beautiful and elegant - I wish I had that voice of yours. Seriously.

Thanks for doing this!

A beautiful voice.

So, just today I got some 8mm film transfered to a DVD and I would LOVE to put it online, the the process is giving me fits. Have you ever done anything like it? Any tips?

JaneyV said...

Oh FH you have a lovely voice too. As fine an English accent as I've heard.... McK has something there - I can hear you reading children's classics too!

Nah - I'm never talking online!

Everything a Fairyhedgehog should be.

Your voice is wonderful — very calming. It's almost like you've emerged from a woodland glade having charmed a unicorn.

Love it, hedgehog. I suddenly want some scones and clotted cream. Mmm clotted cream. As a pseudo-linguist I go to lectures and such about the perceptions of accents and their social construction, etc. And yet I still have the typical American reaction hearing your voice -- oh, she sounds so smart and cultured and lovely!

But of course I thought that before hearing your voice.

I've sorta kinda met the challenge on my blog by the way.

fairyhedgehog said...

Thank you, all of you! I had no idea that the British accent was so popular.

Let me know when you're all popping in for your cup of tea.

I missed some of your comments while I was commenting last time.

Whirlochre - that has to be the nicest thing anyone has ever said about my voice.

And pacatrue - it's nice to know that all I have to do is open my mouth and people will think I'm smart and cultured. Let me know when you want to pop in for your scones and cream. Scones are one of the few things I can cook confidently.

... and now you understand why Americans think of Bush as a cowboy doofus while thinking of Blair as smart and cultured.

fairyhedgehog said...

Well I think of Bush as a cowboy doofus too, but Blair... don't get me started on Blair.

As for Gordon Brown, I have no idea about him whatsoever. Which in itself says a lot.

Exactly my point! Since you're immune to the accent, it has no effect on you. The British accent is sort of like a Jedi mind trick on Americans.

That's so useful to know, pjd. If I want to post something entirely crap and have everyone think it's wonderful, I'll make it an audio post.

What a useful little tool my voice is and I never even knew.

How many Brits are on the blogs? Isn't there some kind of moratorium?
heheheheh!
Nice voice!!! It should be a longer piece, though.
:-)

Hi Chris!

You can't have too many Brits.

Maybe I'll do a longer piece next time.

I liked listening to your voice but I'm laughing loudly at the comments! Oh my, what a wonderful secret weapon you have.

I don't have anything around to record my voice with - and it'll be disappointing to everyone! Americans think I sound English (but in a boring way) and the English think I sound American (but not, I think, in a Bush way. Just in a "you aren't from around here, are you" way).

My boyfriend says my consonants are British but my vowels are American.

fairyhedgehog said...

Oh Sylvia, you must find some way to record your voice. Do you have a webcam with a mike? Headphones with a mike? I don't think it's very expensive to buy a microphone these days.

I'm longing to hear your American vowels with the British consonants.
